Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Book Release Day

 Today in history | July 16, 2005

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - the 6th book in the series by J. K. Rowling, is published worldwide.

Within the first 24 hours, it sold 9 million copies with 6.9 million sold in the U.S. alone, roughly selling 250,000 an hour, making it the fastest selling book in history.
It generated more than $100 million in sales out of the gate, outpacing even the combined take of the top films at the box office.
It was the first book in the UK to have a standard print, large print, and Braille edition released simultaneously.
It is also the first book in the series to be shorter than the book preceding it.

Bookseller Barnes and Noble reported sales averaging 105 copies per second in the first hour of sales.
