Google doodle has also paid tribute to Kadambini today.
Kadambini Ganguly was the very first Indian female doctor who practiced with a degree in western medicine. She was also the first female speaker at the Indian National Congress.Kadambini Ganguly was one of the first female graduates in the entire British Empire along with Chandramukhi Bose and became the first female practitioner of western medicine not just in India, but in the whole of South Asia.Kadambani and Chandramukhi's success made Bethune College introduce FA (First Arts) and graduation courses in 1883. Kadambini's influence also made Calcutta Medical College to open its doors for women.
Annie Besant also praised Kadambini in her book 'How India Wrought For Freedom' as a "symbol that India's freedom would uplift India's womanhood".
A common confusion among public is that who was India's first female doctor to practice western medicine - Kadambini or Anandibai. Well, Kadambini was the first female practitioner of western medicine in India while Anandibai was the first female to receive a medical degree in Western medicine from Pennsylvania (outside India).
