Marvel superhero movie "Avengers: Endgame" became the world's highest-grossing film of all time overtaking "Avatar" earning $2.79 billion

"Avengers: Endgame" is the first film to reach over a billion dollars during its opening weekend in theaters.

However, "Avatar" took its title back post its re-release in China this year as it crossed $2.8 billion mark.

The directors of "Endgame," Joe and Anthony Russo, congratulated Cameron on instagram and wrote "Passing the gauntlet back to you," in their post.

James Cameron, the three-time Oscar winner's 1997 epic Titanic had the crown until Avatar snatched it away in 2010.
