Paulo Coelho's fans will finally get to see the movie adaptation of his best-selling novel.
This project has been on the sidelines for a long time, since 1994 when the rights to the book were first acquired by Warner Bros in $250,000.
The Brazilian author Paulo Coelho wrote this novel in just two weeks and it was first published in 1988. He explained that he was able to write at this pace because the story was "already written in [his] soul."
Its a story of a shepherd named Santiago, who leaves Spain in search of a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids and meets various spiritual messengers along the way.
The book's main theme is about finding one's destiny. The advice given to Santiago that "when you really want something to happen, the whole universe will conspire so that your wish comes true" is the core of the novel's philosophy and a motif that plays throughout it.
More than 65 million copies of this novel have been sold worldwide in 56 different languages, making it one of the top 10 bestselling books. It reputedly holds the Guinness world record for most translated work by a living author.
The unprecedented success of The Alchemist launched Coelho to international literary fame and, in some circles, notoriety. He has won celebrity fans from Bill Clinton, to Will Smith, to Madonna.
