Madhya Pradesh declared the Tiger State of India - 1995

On June 26, 1995, Madhya Pradesh was declared the Tiger State of India.




In 1972, it was discovered that there were only 1,800 tigers left in the country. In 1973 the Project Tiger was launched in the Palamau Tiger Reserve in Jharkhand. By 1995, Madhya Pradesh was home to one sixth of the world's tiger population.

The government of Madhya Pradesh was lauded for its conservation efforts as it was then home to 10% of the world's tiger population.
